Clients tell me I have a great eye for detail, and that comes from almost 30 years as a proofreader and a copy editor. No one can successfully edit their own work to find every error, so I will be your second set of eyes. I will work cooperatively with you, so your pattern will be easily understandable, grammatically and mathematically correct, and a joy for your customers to knit. I will put myself in the knitter's shoes and edit your pattern so it's easily understood, free of grammatical and other errors (such as duplication of phrases), and conforms to standard American English. I use the Craft Yarn Council's list of standard abbreviations (unless you have your own style guide for abbreviations). This review is particularly valuable for non-native English speakers. It's important to understand that I will not change anything on your patterns; my job is to point out what needs to be changed and let you decide.
Some of the basic services I offer are:
- checking your pattern carefully for spelling and mathematical errors
- correcting stitch counts
- ensuring chart and written instructions say the same thing
- reviewing your pattern for completeness (did you forget an abbreviation?)
Pattern types I edit:
Shawls, cowls, socks, scarves, hats, headbands, mittens, wrist warmers, toys/animals, accessories, blankets/afghans, dishcloths, washcloths
General guide to editing time:
I can perform a first pass of between 8 and 10 pages an hour, depending on the complexity of the pattern (see Four-Part Tech Editing Process section below). The time it takes for the additional passes is highly dependent on the length of the pattern, if there are charts, and any errors I have to figure out. Once I see the pattern, I will always email you an estimate of the time/cost I believe it will take, but I cannot guarantee the estimate.
Four-Part Tech Editing Process
My review will strive to ensure your pattern is clear, complete, consistent and accurate. I will make three passes over your pattern and provide pattern notes as a fourth step.
Pricing, Format and Turnaround Time
I charge US$25 per hour, with a one-hour minimum, and after that in 15-minute intervals, with a free review after you have incorporated the edits. I prefer to use PayPal for payment. My usual turnaround time is five days, frequently less, and if you need it sooner, I can usually get it done. Contact me anytime for a free estimate!
I can edit PDFs using the Comments feature or Word documents using Track Changes. I will send you a document with instructions if you are unfamiliar with these functions. After you review and incorporate the edits, you can send the pattern back to me for a final review at no charge. You are encouraged to contact me with questions at any time.
